Freebie: "Snuggie Dog Sweater"

Finally! It's posted - I named this dog sweater "Snuggie" because all I want to do is snuggle any dog wearing it. The superwash wool is a smooth, tight knit with a lot of shaping that hugs your dogs curves. My pups love it! Here are all the details:

Size: Fits my maltese who is 7 lbs. In a bulkier yarn or doubled yarn it would fit a larger dog. Going up a size in the needles and making the sweater a tad longer, it fit my 11 lb poodle with ease with no changes to yarn.
Yarn: Moda Dea Superwash Wool in main color and contrasting color (or any worsted weight yarn)
Needles: U.S. 6 circulars and U.S. 5 dpns
Time it takes to knit: About 5 hours.
I have posted the pattern on 4shared in pdf format so it's easy to print and follow. If you have any questions please email me. Also, if you download the pattern, I would appreciate a comment so I can see the finished result!! Have fun!

1/15/2009: Errata - I just got an email stating there is a typo on Row 25. It states P15, inc 1 st, p5, inc 1 st, P15 (35 sts total) and instead it should be P14 sts on each side.
Please let me know if you see further errors...

  2. hi sarh, I really love the little sweater I think it would look lovely in pink on my 10 pound papillon, I do find the problem I have with sweaters is getting them off, I am so afraid of hurting my dogs feet. I wonder if you have a way of getting sweaters off more easily. I have to get my dog to stand up right and pull like taking of a childs sweater.
I tend to make her sweaters or coats that have an opening at the side to take them of because of this.

  3. Oh sure! I’m sure I could put a pattern together with button holes – or perhaps a zipper (would that be too difficult for people to make?) Let me mull this over…

  7. Adorable! I just made your doggie "Leaf" sweater for my little girl, so now I'll give this one a shot.

  8. Thanks Adair!
I hope the leaf sweater worked out - this sweater is much easier to make. I would love to see people's finished projects! Email me at gattis (dot) sarah (at) gmail (dot) com.

  10. Ruth - google "wrap stitch" and it will have many tutorials on how to do it. It is not a yarn over - it's a method that prevents little holes when you turn your work. It doesn't increase any stitches.

  12. Georgia, You can look at my step by step tutorial for the leg openings for another sweater for help. It's here: http://miaandmaddie.blogspot.com/2009/10/izzys-dog-sweater-leg-opening-help.html
Hope that helps explain how to turn and work separate areas.

  14. I love your sweater, it is adorable! One question, could you please verify the gauge? Moda Dea is 19 stitches = 4 inches on US 8's. Your pattern instructs a gauge of 6 stitches and 28 rows = 2 inch square on US 6's (and therefore 12 stitches = 4 inch square on US 6's. Is this correct?
It is absolutely possible that I am ignoring the obvious so please feel free to point that out!

    Thanks,
    Jennifer

  16. Oops! I deleted my answer. I listed my gauge that I knit it with. I find that I knit very loosely. So make sure you knit a swatch. Chances are that you will move up to larger size needles. The fabric with the gauge I listed came out thick and dense.

  17. Thank you for this one. I'm going to try and make this for my lil 3.5 pound princess. She hates wearing clothes but with the cold front that blew threw thinking she will change her mind. This looks like it will work well for her. May even be able to get her to pose.

  18. Looks like a WONDERFUL pattern. I am going to make this for my neice's dog Bob who is part Maltese and part Yorkie. I couldn't find the Moda Dea washable wool so I found a similar weight blend that should get me the 12 stitches across I need. Just wanted to confirm the guage. For a 4-inch square is it 12 stitches across by 28 rows ? (or 14 rows) ?

    Thanks in advance!

  19. Really cute sweaters! And Mia is adorable- my Maltese, Joey, would love her I'm sure. I'm wondering on the pdf it says for size on the first page- "Small (fits a dog" and that's it- so I'm assuming Mia is small. Joey is about 9-10 lbs.

  20. Sarah,

I have a 7 pound toy poodle & this sweater is just what I'm looking for. I downloaded the instructions but I'm confused. I'm an experienced knitter but I don't know what you mean by "wrap the next stitch" Can you explain?
