Freebie: "Chevron Dog Sweater"

Good Evening! Just call me the dog sweater lady!! For the past 2 days I have been working on a new dog sweater for Mia. I wanted to knit up an item with the skein of hand-dyed yarn I just made and thought that a dog sweater would be perfect.
Here are the details:
Pattern: Chevron Dog Sweater (click on the link for the free pattern for a small dog)
Book: Mia and Maddie Designs
Author: Sarah Gattis
Main Yarn: Paton's Classic Wool
Main Color: Hand Dyed
Needles: 16" U.S. 5 circular and set of four U.S. 5 double pointed needles
Skeins: Less than 1 skein
Notes: Gauge isn't listed but is 8 sts and 16 rows = 2 inch square and the finished product was designed to fit my Maltese. She is 12 inches from base of neck to beginning of tail and her chest measurement is 13 inches. This is a great pattern with 2 chevron cables going down the sides of the back. The neck is knit in ribbing and so is the back cast off edge and leg cuffs. Simple sweater to knit since the chevron cable is an easy 4 row repeat. No seaming needed. The sweater is knit from the neck down and the legs are picked up in the round. If you would like the sweater to be machine washable, choose a different yarn that Paton's Classic Wool because it will felt in the washing machine.

This gauge is confusing me. I'm getting 2inch sqare with 8sts and 10rows. I'm not sure what kind of wool should I use to get that gauge.

I wanted to knit this sweater for my friend's miniature pinscher, and I'm affraid it's going to be all wrong if my gauge is so different from yours.

Gauge is critical - so you're right to think it will turn out wrong. If your gauge is looser - go down in needle size. If it's tighter - go up in needle size. Or you might be using the wrong weight of yarn. The yarn suggested is a light worsted weight yarn. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the fast answer.
I have a problem, since I'm from Serbia, to determine the weight of yarn (and I wasn't sure what weight was that patons wool). I have wool from different countries, and NONE has specifications about weight. Obviously, I tried to use wool that is too thick. I'll buy some other, and try again.

Yesterday, I've made your Ribbed sweater vest, from some super bulky yarn I had left, and didn't know what to do with. :) I only need to buy some buttons. And I'll post a photo. :)

You have a great blog, and great patterns! :) Thank you for that.

Aleksandra,

Thank you for your kind comments. I look forward to seeing pictures of the sweaters! I don't know if you are familiar with yarn weights - light worsted weight would be a yarn that would normally be suggested to knit on U.S. size 6-7 needles. I tend to knit loose - so I use U.S. 5 needles. I don't know if that helps.

Thanks again for your kind comments!

Hi Sarah,

I love your dog sweaters. I just made your Manteau de Madeline sweater and it looks awesome! I have started your Chevron sweater and am stuck on Row 3 of the body as (unless I'm mistaken) the total stitch count is less than 40? It would be helpful if you noted the stitch count for rows 1-4 of the body.

Thank you.
Mary

Thanks for finding the error! It looks like I only included one of the chevrons in that row. So Row 3 should actually read:
K2, inc 1 st, K6, P4, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p4, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in front, k2, k2 from cn, sl 2 sts onto cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p4, K7, inc, 1 st, K1. Stitch count should be 46 sts after Row 3.

Let me know if I'm still mistaken. Basically you are following the 12 stitch chevron pattern between the markers and you are increasing one stitch at the beginning and ending of the row.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for the correction. It makes more sense now. I will try it and let you know if I need more help.

I appreciate your quick response!

Take care,
Mary

Sarah,
How do you adjust a dog sweater? My miniature Pinscher is mixed so she has long legs and is a little bit longer from neck to tail. My husband wants her belly covered so making it longer from chest to back legs is needed to. Help

Mamagriz - when you're knitting in the round for the length just make it longer. Also for the legs when you start knitting in the round keep knitting as long as you want before casting off. Hope that helps!
